More aimed for Jacks attention as I think hes the only Linux user. I'm thinking of getting it but not sure which one to get and also how compatible programs are on it.

I want to be able to use iTunes, MSN and also the Open Office saves documents the same file type as Microsoft?

I know I could google this but I'm a lazy student so not going to.

You'll be able to. Most versions of Linux come with a professional Windows emulator.

Check out Ubuntu. http://www.ubuntu.com/

It's good for people making the switch, or trying out Linux to see what it's like. It has GAIM (although I think it's now called Pidgen), so you can login to messenger and all that kind of stuff.

I don't know about iTunes because it's proprietaty Apple software, but there are some pretty good equivalents.

OpenOffice can open all of the normal Office file types, yeah.

Ubuntu boots as a live CD, so when you boot from the CD it boots into a useable OS, so you can load up programs and see how it all works without installing it. There's an icon on the desktop to install it (the installer is 7 screens asking you to choose your location and put your name in...etc), then it pretty much does it's own thing.

I've got it on my laptop and I'm quite impressed with it. It's good if you don't want to faff around and just want something working. The package manager is also really impressive. You literaly open it, and it shows you all the applications available, click install, and it downloads and installs it.

Worth a try if you want to try something new.

Yeah, go for it. Run it off the CD for a bit and see what you think before you install it.

I feel proud to have recieved 3 potd for one post.

Tried ubuntu last night, seemed quite good, had a little play on open office, actually prefered it to the new office on first try well see when I actually do some work on it.

Going to try and install some programs on stuff it later or tomorrow (really should revise but I can buy a better mark if needs be) had a look at a few guides for beginners and looks pretty simple but we'll see.

I think I could be converted to the nerd side but we'll see.

I've never had to install any hardware under Ubuntu, I must admit.

Modems are always a bit sketchy, but as soon as you can get on the internet it's more or less plain sailing.

Yeah, everything looks simple but that. I have found a step by step guide on the ubuntu website so should get it sorted easy enough.

I think the main reason for change is because my lappy isn't good enough to have all the benefits of Vista.

There aren't any real benefits. It's just another OS. Just a different way of doing things.

1) haven't got disk
2) fancy a change

If I can't get everything to work or too much hassle I will just stick with vista but we will see after the weekend.

Use a Mac. According to Apple, using a Mac will turn you into a trendy middle-20s hipster. Apparently using a pc will turn you into a work-obsessed middle-aged man who doesn't know how to have fun and is going through an inferiority complex on how "advanced" Macs are.

I know. I'm insufferable.

Do you feel like a boring office worker?

When I use a Mac I feel like a trendy youngster. Windows makes me feel so dull and office-like.
