I need some ideas for this design, its boring.

I was thinking the outer areas should be grey with a gradient going in to the white center.
Need to see a few sites that have done the same thing though, cant find any.

Not hard to do. IE supports gradients using CSS. For cross-browser compatibility, use a 1px wide GIF and repeat it.
tbh, i dont really know web design, so cant really offer any "you should do this, or that". however, my opinion is, for someones portfolio site, that seems extremly boring and plain.
A portfolio, you want to stand out, be original/creative and generally be interesting. For example, i saw someones portfolio site, who did it as a book (in flash) where you could scroll through the pages, and it looked extremly interesting, and actually made the reader want to read it.

Well its difficult todo anything because I havent actually recieved his portfolio...I was suppose to collect a disk off him today but he's too busy dominating other people.

No, thats Dans design, we havent discussed money and it was a draft made - he doesnt want the final design for a few months.
